We’re All Culture Hoppers

Throughout the course of a week – or even a single day – we all move through a series of different cultures – each with its own unique routines and ground rules.
First – our home culture – in most cases – this is the most informal environment we will ever know. Then its off to work – or school? Ahh – a whole new set of expectations on how to interact -no pjs or bare feet – and no talking over one another. The shifts go on in the afternoon and weekend – religious gatherings – concerts, sports events, visiting friends, museums, bowling.. Each with different people and different rules.
Have some fun with your kids imagining what language/clothing/actions would be out of place in each setting. Changing how we act in each situation isn’t being fake – it’s being accommodating and showing respect – and membership.
Quote today by Friederich Nietzsche – “They muddy the water, to make it seem deep.”
