The Power of Symbols

Robert Penn Warren said, “A symbol serves to combine heart and intellect.”
Symbols can be a wonderful way of introducing children to the power – and magic – of the visual arts in their lives.
For example – take a wedding ring. It is just a circular piece of metal – and yet it represents so much – it says love, devotion and a promise to one another – and its a message to the world.
Tell the story of your rings to your child. Are there other items in your life that represent something much bigger.
Consider flags, religious symbols, logos for military, sports teams, and scouts.
Symbols have so much meaning to us that, if someone insults or abuses them, we get upset. It is not just an image to us. It’s a manifestation of our identity in some ways.
Today a quote from Ellen DeGeneres “Human beings only use ten percent of their brains. Ten percent! Can you imagine how much we could accomplish if we used the other sixty percent?”
