Sports Vs. Arts

We are all familiar with the perpetual battle the arts face at school budget time. When the funding crunch hits – the advantage must go to math, reading and STEM subjects – all criteria on which schools are evaluated.
The arts are seen/treated as a frill – extracurricular – hobby-related.
And yet …. And yet … sports rarely get cut. Hmmmm.
This is not a diatribe against sports – actually quite the opposite. The truth is that sports generate revenue, boost school spirit and serve as an easy social hub for families and whole towns. All really wonderful things.
What to do about the arts? What can we do to get some academic respect?
I propose – at the very least – that science and biology cover things like – how our brains engage with stories or color. Or we could explore the math of harmony and dissonance. Or perhaps learn about how images can rattle our self esteem in health class?
These simple additions could be a place to begin. Your thoughts?
Today’s quote is by Anais Nin – “I’m restless. Things are calling me away. My hair is being pulled by the stars again.”
