Family History in Songs

“The history of a people is found in its songs.” – George Jellinek.

These conversations can take your child on a musical tour of your family’s heritage. This can be related to your race(s), ethnicities, faiths. You might want to begin with songs from your childhood that meant a lot to you. Encourage your child to ask grandparents about songs they remember – those they feel capture something special about your cultural heritage. Are there other people in your neighborhood who can be helpful?

Perhaps select a few ‘historical’ songs to play while you eat dinner? Way into their future, a time will come when they hear family favorites – and all the warm memories of home will rush back. Listening and singing together while they are young is an investment in lifetime connections.
