Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum! Do Fairytales Prepare Us for Times Like These?

Why do we read stories to our children about wolves in grandma’s bed, poison apples and witches fattening up curious children to bake them ovens? As our little ones hold onto us with the bed covers pulled up tight, we take them on journeys from “Once upon a time in a land far far away …” through horrifying challenges into “… and they lived happily ever after.” Life can be tough and shocking. There is meanness out there. But people can prevail through bravery or cleverness or kindness.

This may be the time those fairy tales prepared us for. Pandemics, global warming, social discord. Losing the comfort of extended family, friends and communities of faith. No school, concerts or movies. Echoes of fee-fi-fo-fum everywhere!

Fairy tales teach us that there is a way. There is always a way.

Once upon a time in this land, …………, and we lived happily ever after. We are writing that story now.
