Culture: The water in which we swim

Culture: The water in which we swim

Fish discover water last – or so they say.

The stuff in which we humans swim all day everyday is culture – all of the arts – everywhere we look. It’s what our human world looks like. It has purpose and power.

Our environment is saturated with stories, images, fashion choices, music, social scripts, rituals and ceremonies – all indicators of the cultures operating around us. Being in a culture is like swimming with a school of fish – or riding the current. We are free to go in any direction but, instead, we choose to belong – to go with the flow. Life gets easier – most of the time.

The Culture Sleuth Workbook can help kids and their families see the water in which they swim.
